On Being Human
a 10-credit Coordinated Studies Course
to be taught Winter 2003
Tom Murphy (Anthropology) & Jenny McFarland (Biology)
A coordinated studies course combining Anthropology (Human Origins) and Biology classes (10 credits) for an in-depth exploration of the biological and cultural evidence for how humans came to be the way we are today. This work will focus on the intersections of cultural and biological perspectives regarding human origins and include examination of primate anatomy and behavior, human gender differences, the concept of “race”, and the peopling of the Americas, among other topics. The class will also offer students two sets of laboratories investigating paleoanthropology, anatomy, cellular and molecular biology, primate locomotion, primate reproduction, and genetics.
