Instructor's Reflections on Time
Deann (math):
A coordinated studies course does take more planning and preparation time than teaching two sections, especially the first time. We were very fortunate that our class was small (only about 20 students), so the time spent grading and working individually with the students was reduced. We spent a lot of time drafting assignments and then consulting with each other about it. The difficulty of combining two disparate fields is that you do not know very much about each other's discipline and courses. This difficulty can be overcome; however, it takes time in discussion and revision.
I did spend a lot of time grading for this class (even though the number of students was small) because not only did I grade the math quizzes and tests, I also read or graded many of their journal assignments and in-class writings.
Despite the time commitment, I did thoroughly enjoy this experience, and I do plan to teach it again.
