Covenant:

The goals of this program are for you to be able to understand and create linkages between patterns in nature and art and the mathematical and physics principles which govern them.  We will work with you to develop techniques of observation, measurement and documentation and to learn the vocabulary, procedures and tools used in math, physics, art and animation.  You will have opportunities to learn to evaluate and/or interpret abstract representations of natural phenomena for their accuracy (in science) or context (in art) as well as the maker’s intent and historical and cultural factors.  We will also ask you to analyze art and data for structure and pattern and represent phenomena both in creative forms and with quantitative models.  We will evaluate your work and award credit with these learning objectives in mind.

In order to support these goals, we ask that you agree to:

·        Attend all program activities on time and prepared to participate, whether that involves speaking, writing, moving, drawing, viewing or discussing course content.  “On time” means arriving before the class is due to start.

·        Contact us in advance by phone or email if you will be absent from class or will miss an appointment.

·        Take responsibility for keeping up with the most current version of the syllabus and class schedule (changes will be posted on the web site) and, in the case of absences, getting notes from classmates.

·        Read assigned texts by the date designated in the syllabus and complete all assignments on time and with integrity, giving credit to those whose ideas you use or whose words you quote.  Late work is not acceptable unless lateness is due to technical problems beyond your control.  Incomplete assignments must be presented on the due date as work in progress.  Work still incomplete by week 10 of each quarter will be evaluated as is.  To earn full credit, you must turn in all assignments.  There will be no “make-up” work or incompletes.

·        Respect any differences of opinion or interpretation group members may have and be open to suggestions.

·        Contribute to the Patterns learning community by respecting your own work and the work of others.  Speak with and listen to your peers as you wish to be spoken with and listened to.  Acknowledge that people have different speaking and listening styles and, especially in seminar, work to facilitate open discussion that welcomes and draws in all members of the group.

·        Use media equipment and facilities and all computer labs responsibly.  Follow requested procedures for booking and use, respect the access needs of your peers and leave all lab areas clean and normalized when you finish with each session.

·        Contribute your share when involved in collaborations and make every effort to communicate necessary information to your team members.

·        Behave in a safe, responsible and legal manner when on field trips.

·        Abide by the Social Contract and the Sexual Harassment Policy.

·        Complete formal self, faculty and program evaluations at the end of winter quarter.

As your faculty, we agree to:

·        Conduct and/or participate in lectures, critiques, workshops and discussions as needed and attend the activities we require all of you to attend, unless absent due to illness or to respect the integrity of the activity.

·        Review your assignments and evaluate them in a timely manner.

·        Be available for conferences with you during office hours or by appointment.

·        Respect any differences of opinion or interpretation we may have and be open to your suggestions.

·        Contribute to the Patterns learning community by respecting our own work as well as yours.  Speak with and listen to you as we wish to be spoken with and listened to.

·        Abide by the Evergreen Social Contract and Sexual Harassment Policy.

·        Complete informal evaluations of you at the end of fall quarter and formal ones at the end of winter quarter, in the context of individual conferences.
