Welcome Letter:

Dear

We are writing to you because you are enrolled in or on the wait list for the Patterns Across Space and Time program. As the faculty for this program, we would like to let you know a little about ourselves, the program and some important information for the start of the year. We are Ruth Hayes and David McAvity. Ruth is an artist and animator with training in experimental and traditional approaches to moving image media. David is an applied mathematician, with formal training in particle physics and string theory. We both have an interest in the patterns and forms that emerge in the natural world and enjoy finding ways to represent them in art and with mathematics. Through Patterns, we will explore some of the topics and themes that arise from this interest. For more information consult the catalog or the website: academic.evergreen.edu/curricular/Patterns/home.htm.

We invite you to an all program meeting during orientation week at 9:00 am on Monday, September 23rd in Lecture Hall 2.  At this time we will give you important information about the program – including required readings for the first day of class, supplies, facility locations and field trip news. You will also be able to meet other students enrolled in the program.  This early meeting will make the first week of class run more smoothly for you. We have a large wait list for Patterns, so we advise you to attend this meeting to ensure your place in the program.

One piece of news that may be helpful for you to know as you are packing to move here is that we are planning an outdoor field trip for the third week of the quarter. If you have camping supplies, such as sleeping bags, mats, tents, rain gear, etc, then please bring these with you to Olympia.  If you do not own any of these items, don't worry.  Camping gear is available through our outdoor education program and you can borrow or rent it for a small fee.

We are both excited about teaching this program and look forward to meeting you in September. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Yours sincerely,

Ruth Hayes                               David McAvity
