Learning Community Capstone Project

You will be teaching a lesson for an elementary science topic incorporating mathematics concepts. In addition, you will describe adaptation strategies for diverse learners and construct the evaluation tools for the lesson.

Steps:

  1. Select one science topic from the following list.

    1. Biology

    2. Genetics

    3. Plants

    4. Ecosystems

    5. Homeostasis

    6. Microbes

  2. Research your science topic using outside sources making sure to incorporate appropriate math concepts.

  1. Synthesize the various components and create a lesson plan using the NIACC template.

  2. For the assessment component of the lesson plan, you will be required to develop two tools. One is a formative evaluation such as a rubric, checklist, rating scale, or worksheet for formative evaluation. The second is a summative evaluation consisting of appropriate test questions.

  3. Using your knowledge about exceptional students do the following:

    1. In part one of a separate document, describe at least three accommodations that you would incorporate into teaching the lesson for each of the following: a student with a mental disability, a student with a learning disability, a student with a behavioral/emotional disorder or ADHD, and a student who is considered talented and gifted.

    2. In part two of the document, consider the formative and summative evaluations you developed then describe at least two accommodations for each of the following: a student with a mental disability, a student with a learning disability, and a student with a behavioral/emotional disorder or ADHD.

  4. Save your project on both your Terra H Drive, and under the J drive in the folder Elementary Education Learning Community and on your electronic portfolio.

  5. Teach your 20-30 minute lesson. Your lesson will be recorded.

  1. Include printed materials under either INTASC Principles 1, 3, 4, 7, or 8 in your portfolio.
