Project Description:
Create modules that will be used in a selected mathematics course (College Algebra) and in applied content courses (General Geology and Economics). The modules will make use of three representations of relations, namely, data tables, graphs, and formulas.
Outcomes for students/project
General:
Students will:
- Understand the connection among a table of values, a graph, and an equation, and
- Use these representations to describe and draw inferences about relationships among quantities in selected content areas.
Geology:
Students will understand:
- Recurrence intervals.
- The probability of an event based on analysis of historical data.
- How a flood frequency curve can be used for hazard assessment.
Mathematics:
Students will understand:
- How data tables, graphs, and equations are used in applied subject areas.
- The meaning of slope in the context of an applied subject area.
- How each function representation contributes to the understanding of a relation in applied subject area.
Economics:
Students will understand:
- The responsiveness of quantity demanded to a change in price.
- The effect of price changes on total revenue
- The relationship between price and marginal revenue
- The relationship between the marginal revenue and the elasticity of demand.
- The relationship between the slope of the linear demand function and the slope of the linear marginal revenue function
