Description of the course

This course integrates arithmetic and beginning algebra. 

Topics include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and their applications; percents and applications; measurement of perimeter and area of plane figures and volumes of solids; operations on signed numbers; solving linear equations in one variable; operations on polynomials; factoring; integer exponents; radicals; graphing; simplifying algebraic fractions; applications of these topics.

 

Philosophy

This learning community will attempt to decrease math anxiety experienced by some of the students enrolled in MAT 0020

It is our philosophy that given the appropriate tools, students will dispel the myth of math as a necessary evil to math as a beneficial necessity

We will enhance the math classroom as  a learning-centered proactive environment by making it a pleasant and non-threatening atmosphere

 

Introduction

MAT 0020 is a remedial math course offered at Miami Dade College (MDC)

SLS 1535 is a Student Life Skills course with students enrolled that have failed one of the College Placement Test (CPT) sections (example: writing, reading comprehension or math).

SLS classes consist of student success values such as study skills, communication skills, tapping into college resources, tackling math and test anxiety, progressive relaxation, stress management and other skills building strategies to nourish the student into academic health.
