Description of project
Beginnings is a learning community that integrates reading, English, and math curriculum at the preparatory level. Our goal is to enhance student achievement and learning to prepare students for college level courses, career and technical programs, and the workplace.
Outcomes for Students
Perform basic mathematical computations using whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and signed numbers
Simplify algebraic expressions and solve introductory linear equations
Interact in writing workshops with other students
Develop paragraphs/essays emphasizing logical paragraph construction with topic sentence, supporting detail, and conclusion
Apply literal comprehension skills such as finding vocabulary in context, main idea, supporting details, and patterns of organization to textbook material
Develop basic word processing and internet skills
Appreciate the interrelatedness of reading, math, and writing in the learning process and application to every day life
Outcomes for Project
Integration of reading, English, and mathematics
Support students in the development of critical thinking
Provide instruction that is learning centered
Increase student persistence within the semester
Increase student retention from one semester to the next
Explicit correlation
between math and non-math content
Focus on the cross-disciplinary use of math vocabulary
One project will be the Greeley Historical/Museum Project, which includes activities from the three disciplines.
Reading essays from Voices and Values text will be used for math calculations and English writing assignments.
