Course Descriptions:
REA 060:
Focuses on strategies for vocabulary development, improved reading comprehension, and enrichment. Prerequisite(s): Placement test. Students must pass REA 060 with a grade of "C" or better for placement into REA 090. Three credits.
ENG 060:
Focuses on paragraph structure and development and introduces the formal essay. Enables the student to review and improve grammar, usage, and punctuation skills while employing critical thinking strategies and the writing process to respond to a wide variety of writing situations. Prerequisite(s): Eng 030 with a grade of C or better or placement test. Students must pass both the exit essay and earn a grade of C or better in ENG 060 for placement into ENG 090. Three credits
Course Objectives: Students will be able to perform the

Use critical thinking skills to develop writing assignments.

Use technology for the use of grammar practice and word processing.

Practice the use of proofreading skills.

MAT 030:
Includes the vocabulary, operations and applications of whole numbers, basic fractions and mixed numbers, and decimals/Prerequisite is math assessment. Two semester credits
Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course the student/learner will be able to:

Calculate using whole and decimal numbers without a calculator

Demonstrate knowledge and usage of whole numbers

Demonstrate knowledge and usage of fractions and mixed numbers

Demonstrate knowledge and usage of decimal
MAT 060:
Furthers the study of fractions and mixed numbers. Also included are vocabulary, operations and applications of ratio, proportion, percent, area, perimeter, US and metric measures, integers, and an introduction to algebraic expressions and the solution of basic first-degree equations/Prerequisite is math assessment or C or better in MAT 030. Three semester credits
Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course the student/learner will be able to:

Evaluation/Grading:
REA 060:
After each chapter in Ten Steps to Improving College Reading is a test on the skills from the chapter. These tests will comprise 50% of the grade, 20% is from the final, 10% from the homework average, and the remaining 20% from integrated projects.
ENG 060:
During the semester graded work will include developed paragraph and essay assignments plus grammar, mechanics, spelling, and punctuation tests. Other textbook homework practices may be graded, and some tutorial computer software exercises are graded. Late writing assignments will be lowered 10% and must be submitted within 7 days from the due date. **There will be no make-up tests. Tests will be held each Thursday of every week. However, a student may take a test prior to the date after conferencing with the instructor. Students must complete web site exercises prior to taking weekly exams. Since the primary objective of ENG 060 is to learn to write well, your final grade will be based upon the following percentages:
Writing 60%
Grammar 40%
**To pass ENG 060, all writing assignments must be completed.
**Please note Students must pass the final writing exam to pass the course and proceed into ENG 090.
