Brief Description of our Project or Course
We are currently in the planning stages of our Math Across the Curriculum Project. We are starting with the small plan of implementing modules into the Biology Labs. It is our goal to actually link two courses in Fall 2008 as a pilot class. Once the pilot class has proven to be successful, we will implement Math Across the Curriculum campus-wide.
Outcomes for project
- Our primary goal is to incorporate teaching modules into the Biology labs to enhance mathematical understanding through hands-on experience.
- We also hope to develop a working relationship between the math and science faculty in order to determine which skills should be emphasized in the math courses with relevant biological examples.
Outcomes for students
- Students should achieve the desired results on both the math and the science objectives. This can be assessed through the lab report.
- Students should realize that math is essential and relevant in their field of study. By teaching the math topics in the science courses and taking science examples back to the math courses, the students realize that math is relevant and worth the effort. This can be assessed through a survey. This outcome is a piece of one of our QEP goals – improving attitudes towards mathematics.
