Map scale as it is related to ratios and proportions
Map Scale:
Scale is a value, represented as a ratio or a fraction, map scale is the relationship between distances on a map and the corresponding distances on the earth's surface expressed as a fraction or a ratio (each scale is constant for a given map). One unit of measurement on the map (1 inch or 1 centimeter) could represent 1000 of the same units on the ground. This would be a 1:1000 scaled map.

Exercise 1)  Map Scale Activity

Using the scale on this map. What is the distance in miles from New York City to Seattle
 Exercise 2)  Map Scale Activity
To understand the concept of  the Scale of a Map, obtain an actual map, you can get maps on the internet by visiting mapquest.com or yahoo maps where you can make street maps of any city in the US. Go there, make a map of your neighborhood by providing your street address, see the scale and try to determine distances based upon the scale. These maps also allow you to zoom in or out, thus changing the scale so you will be able to see a large scale map vs. small scale map.
