This exercise tests skills in using a compass, reading topographic maps, pacing, and GPS.
Prior to the class, a circular multiple-leg trail has been designed using a series of waypoint stations, each with instructions for navigating to the next station.
Materials needed:
- Topographic maps
- Brunton baseplate compass
- Brunton GPS
The following are examples of instructions that might be posted.
- START Using your GPS enter your starting location. Then go to (provide station 2 coordinates) to locate station 2, mark it on your map and obtain that stations “word”.
- Using a compass, pace (xxx yards) on a bearing of (xxxo) to locate and mark station 3 on your map. Don’t forget to obtain that “word”.
- Using your topographic map, go to the intersection of the Popo Agie River and road coming into the Sinks Canyon Center and mark station 4 on your map before obtaining your “word”.
- To find and mark station 5, walk upstream the Popo Agie to a point that is (xxxo) from station 2. Obtain your fourth “word”.
- Using your GPS, return to station 1 to complete the navigation trail. Your fifth “word” will be given to you by your instructor upon submitting your map.
The words, “Ice Cream in Kitchen” will provide a much deserved reward.
