Statistics Inference Project
This project is a statistical report in which you will apply the concepts and methods of confidence intervals and significance tests to make inferences about a population parameter or the difference between two population parameters. Your report will be graded on statistical accuracy and validity and the clarity, flow and completeness of your report. You may work together with one or two other people. The following should be included:
Formulate a hypothesis concerning a population mean or proportion, or the comparison of two population means or proportions.
Define your population(s).
Define the parameter(s) of interest and the variable that describes the data you will collect.
Design a sampling procedure to obtain a simple random sample from your population(s). Your effective sample size should include at least 30 individuals (total).
Implement your sampling design to collect your data.
Summarize your data both graphically and numerically.
Verify that the necessary requirements are met to apply the appropriate inference techniques.
Use a confidence interval to estimate the population parameter or difference in population parameters of interest.
Test your hypothesis with a significance test.
? Include discussion of why you chose your subject, what results you expected and why, any shortcomings with your sampling procedure, a summary of your conclusions and their reasonableness.
Grading Each of the following areas will count 20% of your overall grade.
? Statement of problem, description of population(s) and parameter(s)
? Sampling method, data and data summary (graphical and numeric)
? Significance test
? Confidence interval
? Conclusions, including verifying the necessary assumptions for the inference methods used
