Map Assignment
Rivers
of Identity-Map & Site Evaluation
Start from home (see “heat loss home”© assignment). Prepare a map of the 2-4 block area surrounding your home. Use a larger sheet of heavy paper. This is an informational map and not necessarily a directional map. See the maps on pages 45 and 83 of Williams’ The Street-Smart Naturalist. Include a variety of elements that normally could be used to describe the area.
These could include, but are not limited to the following:
- Recycle and/or refuse containers
- Paved areas
- Lawn
- Residences
- Population of residences
- Stores
- Other non-residential buildings
- Building materials – walls, roofs, condition, etc
- Plants – type and size
- Parked vehicles - cars, trucks, other - types, condition, monetary value
- People – dress, age, race, style
- Birds
- Animals
- Insects
- Light posts, signs, manhole covers
- Other
- Costs of whatever else is there
This map is a kind of summary of the area. We will work with and compare these maps in class to create a variety of quantitative and qualitative analyses and interpretations.
Bring in your map on Tuesday, 10/2.
